I have got some brown seat belt out of the back of a type 3 and was wondering has anyone dyed seatbelts before or know if it feasible. I would like to make them black .

You can buy fabric dye in the supermarket but I dunno how well it will stick to nylon webbing. Buy some and try it out in a small section first - bottles of dye aren't expensive.

My Kombi's rear seat belts are out of an Austin Tasman - with the BMC badge removed. They're still purple.

yes ive done it but the DYR has to be really concentrated to make it work.

A slight improvement dont know if it will go brown to black.h

So long as the dye does not deteriorate the webbing??

Something to think about anyway.

I looked into getting seat belts rewebbed, its possible, but you have to sign a waiver saying you won't use them in a vehicle :repuke

The dye won't work on the webbing. The best thing to do is buy new belts - they're not as expensive as you might think and they'll actually work in an accident (unlike the originals you probably have.)

Once a belt has been strained in an accident they dont have the give that a new one does.........more pain if you're in an accident.

Thanks for the info I might give one a go and see what happens I would realy like to use them as the buckle has the vw logo and the chrome is in very good condition :bounce

Here in Perth there are a couple of companies (both aircraft upholsterers) approved by the DoT to reweb belts for use in vehicles in WA. Fully legal and no waivers to sign as far as I know. Check with your local RTA.

They should be OK - the DOT here in West Oz told me their regs on seatbelts are as per ADR. It just worked out cheaper for me to a get whole new belt setup - and I wasn't willing to drive too far with 30+ year old belts... [It's been shown that 8 year old belts can't protect you inan accident and I actually had my back injured through 15 year old belts.]
