Clearancing for 76mm or 78mm stroke?
Purple Martin - January 7th, 2006 at 06:51 PM

My kombi camper's 2L needs a rebuild so I'm considering stroking it for more torque. What is involved for clearancing for a 76mm stroke, and is there much more work needed for a 78mm stroke?

(I'm thinking about keeping the bore at the stock 94mm because I've heard that thinner walls won't cope with a very heavy bus)

most rebuilds of type 4's involves bigger pistons and not stroking.

Unless you are going 2.7L i dont belive it is required.

V Forces favourite "ecomony" type 4 is a 2.3 L with 103's and a 66mm crank.
Richard likes the 2:1 rod ratio of the 66 crank.

They did one for a camper a while back and i will ba amazed if you would want more torque than that delivered.

Phil Matthews built one of these as well

He doesnt post here much now though.

Give Richard a call as well or u2u Alex Holzl and have a chat with them

Yeah keep a bus engine at 94mm bore and use a 76mm stroke crank, bus engines don't like anything over 94, apparently a 78mm stoke by 94mm bore can be hard to build as .300" base shims are needed for correct deck height to be achieved. I am building a 78mm stroke by 96mm bore type 4 engine for my bug, 96's can be used here as there is less weight to push than a bus and less stress on 96mm cylinder walls. As for clearnacing of the case i don't know as yet as I am still waiting for my rods and cam before starting to clearance case. The crank i got is from Jake Raby in the states it was $480 US and got to my door for about $850 AUS within two weeks of ordering. Ring Either V-force or Wayne penrose they can help more than I can very cool guys too talk too also. Hope my little bit of knowledge helps out mate, Cheers Damien.
