Replacing Crank seal
mr_xtc2 - January 9th, 2006 at 08:31 AM

Hi,
Just wondering about replacing the big seal on the end of the crankshaft (flywheel end). I have had a go at removing it, but it seems that it only wants to disintegrate upon any pulling with pliers or levering with a screwdriver. Any suggestions??

Cheers

Keep going and get a wider blade screw driver to pull it out also remove the O ring inside the flywheel

Have already tried scraping with a screw driver, but seems awful hard going. Is there any solvent etc. that might help?
Have already removed the spring expander bit, but what about the bit on the outside that seems to go in towards the engine, how do i get this out?

there is a metal band inside the plastic/rubber seal (apart from the springy thing) that is a really close/tight fit in the case
i removed one by using a really small screwdriver and gently pushing in to the imagined space between seal and case then levered a little to bend the metal part of the seal enough to mangel it with a larger screwdriver and eventually work it out....gentle perseverence and a little brute force in the right place

drill 2 small holes in the metal strip, insert self tappers or wood screws and pull.

Ok that would tend to make sense, i thought that the metal part was aprt of the case!! Only thing that confused me was that there seemed to be no similar metal bit supplied with the new seal, oh well might go and have a look and see if it wants to play nice this time!
Thanks guys
