Stickshift with-out a clutch pedal.

it means you still have to change gears, but no clutch

barls - January 12th, 2006 at 08:59 PM

it means no clutch pedal as its operated by contacts on the shifter.

They only came in Beetles 68 on and its the same box as in the Porsche Sportomatic

Semi-auto's are awesome!

cool... in that case my kombi was unofficially semi-automatic when my clutch pedal broke... it was kinda mostly engaged, but enough free play to change gears without touching the clutch pedal...

got me home and back to the mechanics the next day

Dave, are you sure they are the same box as a Porsche Sporto???

1303Steve - January 13th, 2006 at 11:22 PM

Hi

They are different, same principle and they are 4 speed where the VW box is 3 speed, no 1st gear.

killakornkobb - January 15th, 2006 at 08:26 AM

yeah the porsche sportomatic is a 5 speed box, and was very different to driving my semi-auto beetle, wicked fun though :D

Grey 57 - January 15th, 2006 at 08:35 AM

The early Sportos were 4 speed, later ones (early/mid 70's were a 3 speed.
Are the VW ones 3 or 4 speed?

PrettyBlueBug - January 15th, 2006 at 09:01 AM

Three speed: 'Low' gear, Drive 1 and Drive 2.
