Tension on front wheel bearings
butidontunderstand - January 14th, 2006 at 07:39 PM

how do you get the tension on the front wheel bearings to be right, is it best to tighten them up so they're tight and loosen a bit a 1/4 of a turn?
thanks guys :thumb

you should be able to move the washer behind the nut so that it has a very slight amount of drag(this is done using a screw driver, being careful not to damage the bearing cage)
wheel bearings are not something to be messed with and they should be packed with grease correctly, with the correct grease.
i've seen an overtightened wheel bearing sheer the stub axle right off!

Also spin the wheel while your tightening the nuts so as to center the bearing as per above

Packing the bearing with the correct grease and doing the packing correct is most important

also over tightening will damage the bearing and creat drag on the wheel
