camber compensator query

i bought a camber compensator from vintage veedub supplies a while back and we fitted it to my '68 beetle.

since then, the car has driven about 200 miles, and yesterday i was driving back from lone star and all of a sudden the rear of the car started behaving a little odd, just bouncing around a lot more than usual.

i drove it over to my dad's place today and we took the back wheel off and found that the edge of the camber compensator had worn a hole in the bottom of the shock of course causing all the fluid to drain out.

we checked the other side and we could see wear on the shock there too from where they had been rubbing. so for now, we've replaced the shocks and removed the camber compensator.

had we installed it wrong? are there different types of camber compensators out there for different year models and we were given the wrong one?

what's the deal?
