Just want some opinions about engines.
If you had the option of a 1600 or an 1800 in a bay kombi with respective gear box what would you go for. Or would you do something else altogether?
Cheers
ahh, for arguments sake, lets say non-vw engines are not an option... :P

I like type IV motors, so I'd go the 1800. Mine doesn't sound too good anymore, and isn't real smooth, but she's a champion anyway! But yeah it
might be more expensive to reco and stuff...?
EDIT: oh yeah, mine's a '74 1800 bay.

So would you say the ongoing costs of an 1800 would be greater than the 1600? More specifically the issue is a 1600 with a busted push rod or an 1800 that probably needs a rebuild. I would assume the rebuild would be more expensive but possibly better in the long run with the extra power etc..? anymore wisdom would be good.
id say a 1600 t1 motor would be a lot cheaper to rebuild...and if it doesnt need a rebuild to start with while you are changing that one push rod. you
could add some extra goodies for the cost of the 1800 rebuild to make it equally as powerful.

What sort of things would you suggest could be added to give it this extra power...??
1800 in my opinion is definitlety a better motor. Long term reliability would be better in a bus.
If the bottom end on the 1800 is good, then barrels, pistons, rebuilt heads and a gasket kit would set you back maybe $1400. If you need original twin
carbies, distributor rebuilt, factor in another $400. Should last many years then. Almost anything on a Type 4 motor is more expensive, but also
produces more power, torque and lasts longer. If good quality and maintained that is.
All said I would think with $2000 you would get a pretty good type 1 built.
get a 2lt instead of the 1800, same price second hand and better for the bus and easier to rebuild as 1800 p/b sets are hard to find and you cant use 1800 in a 2lt as the piston pin height is different, when your done doing up the 2lt you have an engine that will last a very long time ,make sure when you pull down the t4 for rebuilding the centre web isnt cracked ,this is very common but easily fixed :beer:beer:beer
Thanks eveyone. :thumb
