Karmann ghia pan swap
242 - January 21st, 2006 at 11:24 PM

Has anyone here done a type 1 Karmann ghia body swap onto a type 3 chassis? It looks like it could be made to work with out to much fuss. Would need to change to ghia floor pans and type 1 front chassis bulk head. Anyone know of a website dealing with this?.

Is it common to use a beetle chassis with new ghia pan in leu of a Ghia chassis? Again it appears as though the rear pan bulk head would need modifcation...

Karmen some piccies would be great.

Dave i know the body wont be a straight bolt up. It looks like it may go with some mods to the pan. I have a body sitting on a t3 pan at the moments and track plus wheel base looks to be ok. Am interested due to the better front end on type 3s

Have you tried this Dave or do you know any more info?

Sorry, that is a "thing".
I think that, they might be harder to find than a ghia chassis.
May be able to attatch the type 3 panhalves to a beetle back-bone.
Perhaps vw54 will tell us what part doesn't fit.
Anything can be fabricated!

Have heard the 181/2 chassis fit.... little hard to find in Aus. Also heard the type 3 pans are the same, they are definately different at the front footwell area width may almost be ok.. Someone on here must have some tinkering experience with this fit.

A type 1 ghia pan is completely different to any other VW

a type 3 ghia uses the pan from a type 3 and inter change

Type 181 or things are different again and fit nothing

If the pan under your Type 1 ghia is buggared then replace it with origional floor pan halfs. there available

I can understand changing to the Type 3 suspension yes it does ride better... maybe you could just change the bulkhead taht would be easier

Yeah the ghia pan halves are different but is the chassis back-bone (tunnel) and other ancillary attachments the same basic dimensions as a type1 beetle? I dont have a ghia chassis, just a body!

vw54 - February 1st, 2006 at 06:19 AM

yeah the backbone is the same on a type 1 ghia and Beetle.

The Type 3 is slightly different
