The Dog-O-War (71 Baja) is going to get a workout over the next month to come. Barrington tops trip offroad with lots of corrugations, Newcastle traffic lights for a week, Stockton beach for two days and the freeway trip for a day and a half in Sydney - then back to Dubbo.

I've gone over the electrics: points, plugs, leads and lighting. The mechanic here, Hanz is going to replace the leaking flywheel seal while I replace the transaxle rubbers and give the pan a protective lick of paint.

Anything else you think I should be looking at before I head off?

If ya going up to Barrington Tops make sure ya heater and demister is working.

Also make sure ya pack a camera.

tow another vw behind you for spares, that's the safest option

Well I have a kid in the front seat with a rag to fix any errant condensation Astro, sometimes I feel like I've packed a second dakka Wes and I probably would have forgotten the petrol Silver so thanks for that. I was eyeing off Jerry cans the other day and wondered it it would be a good idea to take extra fuel along.

take the jerry cans...the're indestructable! i remember when my dad backed over a empty one and it was still good after we straightened out all of the big dings that stopped it from standing up by itself....

If your pulling the engine out to do the rear main oil seal, I'd suggest you check out the banana mounts and front gearbox mounts (do you have a gearbox strap?)
And make sure the front end is given a good grease.

We finished putting the motor back in this afternoon and it actually went in easier that it came out I think. Only have to wiring and tuning to do tomorrow. It came out to replace the rubbers (banana and nose) as the oil had perished them and the had all spilt. Bolted a bracket on to hold it all and resrayed the motor and engine bay, guards etc.

The seal will have to wait until I return unfortunately - the mechanic here is too busy and I don't have the dollars anyhow.

before you put that motor in (late as usual)
take the tin ware off the top of heads (after fan housing) and do complete head retorque.
You normally only get to do the bottom ones (and this is usually enough ) but when you get the chance is good to do the lot.
