Park lock position on Semi-auto Beetles

Hi

I was looking at a glove box manual for 1303 (L bug) today, in it was the layout for the gearshift for semi-auto Beetles. It clearly shows that they have a park lock position. I have the same manual for 1302 (superbug) and it dosent show this position.

Has anyone ever seen this before, 1303 semi-autos are pretty rare in Australia, I have only seen one and it was owned by a senoir VW Australia person it was at the VW Nationals a few years ago, aparently the car survived Cyclone Tracy.

The thing that always worried me about semi-auto Beetles, was what would happen if a handbrake cable snapped while the car was parked.

Steve

PS. Thanks to Bizzare for the scan of the glove box manual.

Is that only for 1303 semi-autos?

yeah the park lock position is only for the very late semi-auto's cant remember what year, i'll look it up :)

ours dosent have them laura.

my handbrake cables have snapped before.. the only thing you can do is park close to a kerb, with the wheels on an angle, so if ya roll, its into the curb.

VW introduced the Park feature in the 74 production year.

Hi

That seems to be the case, I have a paraplegic friend who owns 3 semi auto 1500s and we tried it on one of his cars yesterday and it didnt lock. Below is one of his bugs.
