when my engine is running there is a fair bit of movement in the top part of the outer pully of generator, i have tightned the front nut & it didnt
make a lot of difference,
do i need to tightn the back nut behind the fan house(what size socket?) or is there any other places to stop this loud knocking~ thanks All~

Can you move the pulley back & forth?
Can you put your hand around to the fan and do the same?

Yes there is movement when i pull the bolt @ the back & that is the knocking that occurs when running~
i had the back fan nut come loose a lot of times
also the shroud of the motor used to move and scrape the fan
i just retightened the rear nut back up
if you got too much movement it might be a bearing worn out
as for the shims in the belt pully you just have to move them around untill you get the right tension on the belt but not too tight you can stuff up
your genny if you have the belt too tight

36mm. I got a spare 1/2" drive one..u2u if you want it.
You should have at least 8 shims for the gen/alt pulley, and some spares as you use these to clearance the fan to backing plate.
The washer on the fan should be a waved type. Check it isn't flat or someone else hasn't just bunged on whatever fitted.
If you have shims and both nuts are tight and it still wobbles around....I'd be taking it out to fix whatever is wrong. As dirty hands suggested, you
could have knackered bearings.

borrowed a 36mm back bolt tight,
removed pulley, have only got 2 very thin flat spacer washers, maybe the problem can i get just any type of washer that size??

Starting at the fan end.
There should be a bearing spacer (small collar), the fan hub, maybe some shims, the fan, the big waved washer and the 36mm nut.
The shims if used are supposed to space the fan away from the backing plate. I've seen 1.6 to 1.8mm in one manual and 2mm in another as the gap.
At the front (pulley end).
Another bearing spacer, the rear pulley half, some shims, front pulley half, more shims (8 total for a good start!), cup and nut.
Is it all there?
2 shims between the pulley halves generally makes for a tight belt, and 6 or more should go under the cup.
Don't use a washer!!! The shims are cheap and provide gradual adjustment......
