If it is the remains of the plug seperator it should do no harm.It will work its way onto the cylinder air fins and stay there.You will have to pull
the fan housing off to remove the piece as there is no way it can escape unless very small piece.
This shouldn't cause a vibration and not much noise either.Check alternator/generator pulley hasn't come loose.I have had a couple of these
pulleys(usually the cheap chrome ones) spin on the shaft,flogging out the locating shapes.So check that you can't spin by hand the rear part of the
alt pulley.

cant spin the pulleys by hand... i have reached in and tried the fan on the back of the alternator and i cant move it.
Is it a metal on metal noise? Does it sound like something is rattling around in the fan shroud (ie: random) or constant grinding?
constant noise that increases with engine rpm... tinny noise...
You may off broken the centre out of your fan?Does the noise continue for a second or two after shutdown?Can u spin the outside of the fan by reaching behind the fan housing?
So did you make it home??
thanks for all the help peoples.... i made it home... but boy what a saga.. wont go into details but at least now i know what is wrong.
motor will be coming out for a full inspection inside the fan shroud etc...
but but, you don't need to take out the engine just to get to the fan shroud!
Try moving the generator (loosen the strap first) back or forward as it may be fouling on the shroud.. it's happended to me before..

If we r talking a normal upright mtr in a beetle, the fan shroud can come out maybe & the gen certainly with the eng in situ. The latter mayl solve
ur problem.
Loosen the gen strap & slide it back to clear the pedestal.
Remove the 2 6mm bolts that attach the shroud to the top of the tinware over the cylinders
Lift & rotate the shroud counter clockwise to expose the 4 bolts that attach the gen to its housing/shroud. Use a fat screwdriver sandwiched betw the
shroud & the tinware to prop it up
Remove the 4 bolts & pull the gen forward & out.
U may be able to fix ur prob thru the hole where the gen was.
The shroud may or may not come out. If it's the old type oil cooler it will be tough but the doghouse coolers r shorter & it will need less head room
to clear them. Good luck!

thanks... will see what i can do.. but i think because of the carb/inlet manifold set up i cant remove the alt without the carb & manifold off and cant remove them without engine out.
