T3 Air Flow Unit

Our T3 van is being a bit dodgy in the morning and after seeing and replacing a few sensors it has come down to the air flow unit. One part, the thermistor is no longer working. Bosch used to stock this part but now require you to buy a complete airflow unit. VW wants a ridiculous amount for it and from bosch it isnt much better.

Is there a common part that can be used instead or any other ways this problem has been bypassed?

Ring Vintage in Sydney 02-9789-1777 he may have a spare or tell you the alternate, they do a lot of T3s.
