Engine troubles
Chewy - February 25th, 2006 at 04:45 PM

Ive just put a 1800 type 4 motor in my kombi which was previously fuel injected. I bought it running in a kombi and it ran pretty damn good.
I stripped all the FI stuff off it since my kombi does not have the wiring for FI and put a set of duel solexs that were originally on an 1800.
Now that its in my kombi it runs like crap.
It sounds sort of OK free revving the engine up in nuetral but under load the engine pops and farts and carrys on.
With the timming set at 7.5dbtc advance the engine runs very rough, misfires a lot and will not accelerate under load.
With the timing set to a massive 40dbtc the engine runs a lot better but still pops and is down on power.
Any ideas?
Cheers

Are both fuel solenoids opening on the carbies? If one has the wire off it or it is faulty, it can make it run like a bag o stuff. I dunno, just a thought. Auto chokes set?

I didnt even know they were solenoids, thought they were part of the choke sytem so they are not hooked up, will go try now

Didnt change a thing :(
It needs a lot of advance before it stops backfiring out the carbies??? :jesus

did u get carbies balanced?

are u sure of condition of carbies? could have idle jet blockage perhaps.

the fact that it has to be advanced so much could mean its running very lean.

hi, just a thought plug leads can break down under load and give smooth idle, also coil,,,,regards ken

definantly sounds like a carby prob!
here are a few sites which give a bit of a description on tuning.

http://www.aircooled.net/gnrlsite/resource/articles/dualcarb.htm

http://www.clubvw.org.au/tuning_tips_for_tips_twin_carb_k.htm

hope this helps a bit...

Seeing as they have that "central idling" set up - you 100% sure you got all the hoses in the right place??

With the motor off and looking down the carbs you are getting a squirt of fuel??

200% sure you got the firing order right??

And just because you hooked up the idle cutoff solenoids doesn't mean they're working! Check them!
