Anyone made an engine stand to run motor
BrisDubba - March 5th, 2006 at 08:29 PM

Heh all,

I already have a nice engine stand to build a motor but I was thinking it would be good to now make a stand of sorts for the completed motor, one so I could have the motor running before going to trouble of putting it in the car.

I have the starter and the bellhousing- oh and yes I have the motors...

I envisage that it would be advantageous to have the motor secure and still be able to access the valves, and take on/pull off exhausts- am thinking of incorporating a tacho and adapt a lawn mower style throttle on a control panel.

Does anyone have anything similar ? Or can these be readily purchased somewhere already, so I am not reinventing the wheel.

Any suggestions appreciated..

Peter

How often do you reckon you'd use it?
just as easy to bolt the bellhousing to the motor on the floor and run it that way

I bought a $55 engine stand (super cheap special) which is rated for 450kg, then bolted the bellhousing from a kombi gearbox to it.

Used it today for running my type 4 motor !!

Yeah I made one using the bellhousing from a 1800 kombi box, allows access to everything whilst running in/tuning engine. My mate's 2110 is currently on it (and has been run on it successfully many times). Depending on how quickly you are after one, that one could probably be had for a carton of stella/corona in the next month or so as the 2110 will be going into his KG - can't say for sure but it could be a possibility. U2U me if you are interested - I'll have to check his time-lines. If not I'll see if he can take a couple of pics of how it is set up.

Cheers
Alan

Pardon my ignorance, but if it is for a Type 1 motor would the kombi bellhousing fit and it it does, would the Type 1 starter motor fit the kombi bellhousing ??

Yes and yes.Made a stand a while back and had ignition switch/oil temp and pressure guage, taco etc installed on it so everything could be monitored.Beats putting in and out of a car all the time!!!

I usea 20 Liter steel tin or even sit the engine on the floor.... no need for a fance stand they dont move around at all.

I just ran mine on the floor, with a few bits of wood and some cardboard...

are you likely to crack or damage the crankcase by running the engine with it only connected to the bell housing... sounds like alot of load for those 4 bolts...

With the exception of the type IV engine that does utilise the rear engine hanger/support, the type I engine is only ever supported by the four bolts when in the beetle so no, no chance of damaging the crankcase running it on the stand.

A milk crate works well too.
