Ok, my 64 1200 electric fuel tank sender unit had 2 wires coming from it,
one directly to the guage.
the other to the metal of a bolt that holds the tank in.
that wire did not look original, nor correct in where it lay, so in removing it i discovered the guage still to work.
am i correct in saying the sender unit is grounded by the tank, or does the unit need a seperate grounding?
does anyone have a picture, i will attach a picture of what mine currently looks like.

thats what the wire you took off would be then
no, the guage Still works.
removing the wire did nothing, so im wondering if that wire is needed.
It is better to have the extra earth attached directly to the gauge sender unit.... the bit of wire you took off is stock they always look cruddy put it back on.
ok, ty, might run the 2 wires together and heatshrink them near the sender unit make it look neater

i've had 2 standard bugs and 2 super bugs and the supers had factory earth wires but neither of my standards had them and one was an old granny bug
which had never been stuffed with
but it would be a good idea to run an earth on standards
30+ years of dirt build up doesnt make for a good earth
Joel
Standard bugs from the early 60s didnt have a fuel gauge so they wouldnt have the earth wire or sender unit in the tank,.
