Beetle engine stand off help ahhhhhhh
eraser - March 9th, 2006 at 08:10 PM

Ha,
Ok i got a pair of VW engine standoffs now i have spent the last hour slaving away haha (first time taking the back hood off wasn't that fun putting it back on...

Anyway my problem. On the normal engine stands for the beetle is there a left and a right? just because i have installed my stands but the hood seems to be leaning to the right by about an inch. Anyone want to give me pointers or any idea what I'm doing wrong?

BTW its a 68 beetle.

yes put down the beer in your left hand to level your self up and inch ( ! )

eraser - March 9th, 2006 at 08:36 PM

lol when i say leaning to the right it is shifted right 1 inch like the right mounting can connect to the decklid on onle one side the other side is off about an inch.

Ha ha i just had a neon sitting arround and i took this haha cool eh? *end wankyness*

One whole inch?! That's a lot. Maybe you should put down that beer and use both hands. As far as I know, the hinges are ambidextrous(sp?), otherwise, I've been lucky and have gotten mine the right way around the past 10 times...

No idea. Are you using Hoodjax? Where's Glenn (vwcool) when you need him.

eraser - March 10th, 2006 at 07:37 AM

Is that engine lid off that car?

If so, what are those brackets you are using?

Right here! But I don't think I can help with this..

EDIT: Yes I can. Maybe loosen all the bolts holding on the new alloy jobbies and align things up properly

After holding up a ruler to the screen, the left arm seems to be at an angle - not so much moved entirely over to the left. Perhaps you have something stuck under the surface where it joins to the body causing it to keel over to one side and thus no aligning correctly?

okies will give it a go tonight and let you know thanks all

PrettyBlueBug - March 10th, 2006 at 11:24 AM

If only you had Hoodjax instead, they're SO much betterer!! :P

eraser - March 10th, 2006 at 10:41 PM

Thanks for your help all, It was as simple as undoing the bolts and hitting it across. I feel stupid. Ha But not only does it look cool they actually keep the motor a shipload cooler no more red oil light flashing on idle :P

Just another question when it rains is there stuff i should stop the rain getting onto e.g the generator??? If so are there covers i can buy or just make some? just what exactly should i be covering? And today it was 38 took the car for an hour long drive and it worked like a treat cool and neat Another problem i got is locking the boot lid how does that work lol.

ctefeh - March 13th, 2006 at 10:33 AM

Eraser,
My generator has a VW steel strap that covers the UPPER slot only.

You can buy plastic jobbies, but again, only fit one to the upper slot. And there are some "fitment" issues. One I bought barely clipped in and would probably fall off quite easily. I just stuck with the stock strap in the end.

Enjoy

doesn't the generator need the slots open for ventilation though?

ctefeh - March 13th, 2006 at 10:54 AM

Oval,
Yes they do, but one is sufficient. I'd probably run both open in extremely hot temps.

neon dont look 2 bad LOL:o

Joel - March 13th, 2006 at 03:37 PM

are you talking about the slots where the brushes are?
i havent had a fan apart for a few years but im pretty sure there are 2 slots in the fan itself that divert air into the genny
dads trike has some sort of plastic cover over the top brush slot
i tried to get a shot of it but the body makes it hard to get decent engine shots

Mine didn't seem to have any trouble starting the other day when I left my HoodJax on and it pissed down... It wouldn't do any harm in insulating it though

thanks eraser,
just the bare terminals like that wont be worried by rain but if you are concerned you can get rubber boots for generator conections
alternator vws have them as standard probably try an auto electrician or maybe repco might have them

the main problem with rain getting in is usually the dissy or coil
my Lbug has refused to start the last 2 times it stayed out for the night in heavy rain, had to spray my points with wd40 to get it started
