has anyone ever sucessfully removed a crank pulley from an engine whilst it was still in a beetle?

i've always had to use a puller to remove it when out of the car but i dont wanna drop my engine out just for the sake of removing the pulley
i have twin carbs which have to be removed to drop the engine out which can make a 30min job take several hours

I swapped my pulley for a degreed one the other day.

Big spanner and a couple big screw drivers
Took 1/2 hr of prying and slowley off it came

Finally had to take the rear plate off to get a hammer enough swing (side ways) to tap the new one on far enough to get the bolt started.

Used one on them new sporty bolts the is a 3/8 socket drive rather than the 32??mm bolt

i had thought about just prying it off with screwdrivers but was worried about damaging the case

the 2 slots in the standard pulley are for a tiny little puller that the dealerships used
doubt thered be anything like that round these days though

i have done it with a proper puller before, whilst the engine was still in the car......

seen em around, try Volksfolks or Classic vee dub , vintage etc if you have got time to wait for delivery

make ur own
i did
4" plate 1.5 wide
big hole oin middle for a 4" long say 19 mm bolt to screw to tward the crank when u have welded the matching nut on outside of plate
2 x 13 mm bolts and nuts throegh them pulley slots u mentioned through two matchin holes in the plate.
these hold the plate onto pulley and as u screw in the middle bolt she comes off slowly.

check the crank not and hole dia so u DO NOT DAmage the crank thread.

I've done it in the past with tyre levers, big screwdrivers etc. it works but not real well. Now I just use one of these,

That saved me a question, is the cranks pully ment to be very sloppy or tight~ mine seemed a little loose, but then went tight~ thanks~

Crank pullet is ment to be tight

Some years ago i broke the pulley on my buggy. We got the pulley off with tyre levers and big screw drivers and wooden scraps to protect the case. The Baja exhaust was still on while we did it. Getting the new one on was awkward as we couldn't get a good swing at it with a hammer, but it eventually tightened down OK, with lots of tightening and tapping. We knew it was tight when the pulley rang like a bell as when it was loose it went thud.

Are you getting confused with end play in the motor??

Is your whole crank mooving in and out my a mm or 2??

i have the same problem as s-deez,
i took my fan belt off and removed the pulley bolt yesterday but nothing was gonna budge my pulley, i used screwdrivers, tyre irons and a giant wrecking bar which started bending the pulley but it moved like 1mm so i gave up and put it back together,
will try again on the week end.

i used a slide hammer

Had to use a crank pulley tool with two large pry bars. Take the strain with the tool, use the pry bars to wiggle and "slide hammer" either side...repeat about 15 times. The last 1/4" I was able to wiggle the pulley off. Before that...forget it.

Here is that bolt.

This is how I approached the problem. Of course I had the motor out when I drilled and tapped the holes, but if you prepare your pully before you install it you could do it.

isnt that pulley drilled to fit a type 4 crank in an unpright conversion?

No it's just a standard pully with three hole drilled and tapped in it

M6 3 off on 55 P.C.D. 6 deep

ah ok,
i've seen type4 upright conversions done on the cheap using standard pulleys and they are drilled alomost exactly the same the way
