can people give me some details on supercharging a kombi ie whats needs to be done to the engine, how hot they get, what supercharger to use and a
approx of cost if possible and the things needed to be made and what gain in hp/torque?

greedy51 has supercharged a kombi motor. Might be a good idea to talk to him.
also my favourite VW shop is blowing a Type 4 at present.They are in the Bussiness guide under CBBVW.

I imagine that heat would be a problem, they tend to run a little hot
in standard form.
If you can , I'd factor in an external oil cooler..
Of course they return excellent torque increases from the motor.
You probably dont need to do anything to the motor if you are going low boost and the motor is standard.
whats the normal boost they can run??? anything compared to a turbo???

you'd want an intercooler if you're going with any kind of forced induction. A used subaru water-to-air is about $650. Keep the stock
bottom end but definitely uprate the bolts in the conrods. Stay on lowish boost if you aren't going to go for forged pistons.
You need a good exhaust to handle all the extra power, a good exhaust on a type 4 will make a big difference.
i'd personally go turbo cos they can make more maximum power.
so i will need to run an intercooler thats kool turbo setups are to exy at the mo so a good supercharged engine will be fine!!!

you won't be able to run an intercooler with a draw through carb set-up, that applies to turbo or supercharger.
Also some jap superchargers won't like a draw thru carb set-up due to the fuel damaging the seals.
stock jap supercharged engines tend to run 5-7psi. Then there are overdrive pulleys available that bump them up to around 12psi. roots style
superchargers start getting inefficient above these pressure.
Centrifugal or whipple screw superchargers will run up to 30psi with no probs.
Yeah Rhys I was going to say 5 lbs boost.
You will still get heaps of grunt, instantaneous throttle response, it will feel like a much bigger engine and you wont need to change engine.
The amount of total advance will need to be checked and will run Premium unleaded. With water injection will be a joy. Have you by chance got
Injection ?
If not the initial tune of the carb may require good dyno guy to safe guard engine.

the standard injection is an old and primitive system.
You could probably adjust it but it may be a lot of stuffing around and may not suit in the end.
Maybe worth a try if it is all fitted , but do have some measure of leanness - like dyno or gas analyser for the set up tests.
Nothing worse than burning out piston from too lean.
I just imagine that when it goes on boost it may not get enough fuel from the standard inj.
I wondered if the extra injector for cold running could be used to richen when on boost.
so its better off buying a motor already setup for supercharging then seting up a VW motor nothing like cruising then hitting it and know u can hit
it!!!

the motor is strong enough.
Its just that the standard injection was not intended to be used on forced induction and if you tried using it then you would need to be carefull and
have it checked to see that when you hit it it can supply enough fuel .
im goin to a guy that is crazy about superchargin/turboing motors he can make everything exhausts turbo's themselfs and intercoolers etc!!!

For ignition all you need to do is get a vaccum canister that retards the timing under boost. You just swap them over with the factory can. Sorry I
dont know where you get them, apart from out in my driveway.
For low boost lets say up to 7psi you dont need anything other than regular unleaded if the compression ratio is unaltered from standard, although
good insurance. If you are building an engine from scratch I would drop compression to something under 7.0:1.
Intercooling is a must have item.
If supercharging I would leave factory exhaust. The big limiter is the exhaust ports which you are more or less stuck with. Just change the tailpipe
to something larger. Would be heaps stealthy. But then you are going to want it LOUD so I can see this suggestion being erased pretty quick.
factory ingition wont work cos the computer wont have a clue what to do with fuel loads under boost. The injectors will flow enough unless you go
seriously crazy say 20 psi.
Nothing wrong with stock type 4 components. They will take all the sub 5000 rpm abuse you can dish out. Just keep it cool.
