Hi all,
Well I've bought my first ever classic VW. A 1962 split-screen kombi. Anyways, I was reading on the net somewhere (forget where) that you can fit
a Porsche 911 engine into old type 2's. Is this true? I really hate how slow the bus is and i really want to increase the speed. So about how
much would it cost? Thanks for the help.
i wouldnt know the cost but imagine u would have to cut up the splitty which is a no no in my books keep it original and get a stan pobjoy engine a
1916cc set ya back about 6 grand for his best he is the best VW engine maker in aussie

i was just looking in a recent volksworld mag, there is this conversion in an article on a split bus.
The said that it can be done without it hanging out the end with a small to medium amount of work. and of course to make the wheels spin you would
want the 5 speed box to go with it. $$$$$$$$
the engine bays are about the same size said in the mag. also the rear end suspension would change as well $$$$ and why not change the front too so u
can keep it looking strait ahead !
all adds up !

a flat six would make it go pretty nicely. Just the only problem is cost, even used they are hell expensive.
An alternative is a VW Type 4 engine from a late Kombi. A hot Type 4 will make it go nicely too
Either way it's not going to be cheap.
What about a chev corvair flat 6?
Pretty strong and powerful and way cheaper than a Porshe motor.

Check out this 2.7 l porsche RSR turbo in a 73 bus lots of fun.
This isn't a flame, I'm just curious: if you want to go fast, why did you buy a '62 kombi? Would a nice 1600 (or larger) give you
sufficient speed, without making major alterations?
as i staed above col if u put a 1500 type 3 in which will get rid of the reduction boxers or get a later 1500 kombi box (65-67?) and fitted a 1916
pojboy or even a 1600 sp ur gonna notice i big differance and no alterations needed!

A friend of mine is into 911s and a motor is about $9500 including the mech fuel injection. This is from a 1975 model but sill performs. If it were me
Id be puting a nice VW motor in it would be cheeper.

ok well firstly thanks for all the help. after reading all this i see that its much too expensive to get a 911 engine. i have read many different
ideas to increase speed so im not sure what route to take. what i want is a kombi that can cruise freeways at 110km/h without having to pull over
constantly to take a break since i will be travelling fairly large distances (since the kombi is a camper). thanks again for all the help!
hey jake...
i've a '62 and it gets a good floggin' from the coast to the city and north. i run a neat 1600tp. still have the original box but no
longer the reduction hubs. even with safaris open full tilt i am able to run in the fast lane on the expressway. and to help stop i've four wheel
discs all round. believe me, these were the best thing i did. no point goin faster if you cant stop. if you want to smoke 'em then maybe just go
for a warm 1776. but really what i have set up is perfect for gettin along without hassle. if your interested get on to mike at custom bugs and busses
in penrith or talk to him at the nationals.
