Anthiron - March 23rd, 2006 at 03:21 PM

ok ive got my old coupling out which is sloppy as hell and i try to slide the new one onto the gearbox shaft and the shaft wont slide into the hole.

old one slides on fine obviously. were they different sizes?

have i been sent the wrong coupling? it could only be out by about half a mm or so.

ive had trouble sliding on shift coupling previously... might be worth asking the supplier if its the right one for ur application

bought it from classic vee dub at rydalmere.

told the guy it was for an early 60's bug.

do you know if there are different types?

its a bit of a long distance call to sydney lol.

most vw places i've seen only stock 2 types
the old round style on pre 64(?) i think and the sqaure block type that are from there on
is it a genuine one?
i got a replacement for my 74 Lbug a few years ago that was made in brazil and it had more slop than my old original one
it may just be a bad casting

no slop in the new one.

its the old round type.

looks exactly like the one i took out.

it didnt come in a box or anything so no documenttation just came with all the other parts i ordered loose in the box

it looks to be very well made just wont slide over the shaft:cussing

I did mine the other day - and bought it from same place. But for a later L bug.

I pulled the urethene blocks out and put them in the old VW housing. Worked fine

Is this possibe??

um...

this thing looks to be all metal.

so no....

barry, the old ones are all one piece iirc
is it just cast with a smaller hole than the original?

could you open it out with a drill to fit?
and is it both ends are to small or only one?

i think i had a similar problem when i changed mine... just get some emery and clean up the inside of the hole a little... it should then slide on... oh and clean the shaft up too..

Anthiron - March 23rd, 2006 at 05:30 PM

yeah im gonna give it a go with some fine sandpaper.

both ends wont fit.

hopefully a little bit of a burr erradication will fix the problem. not now though. i put the old one back in to get to work tomorrow.

blutopless2 - March 23rd, 2006 at 05:53 PM

i didn't have that option... mine failed and had to get home by using vice grips to hold the shafts together... lol

U may have purchased the sheap coupling that dosent fit anything.... sometimes its better to spend a little more funds and get one that works.

as Barry said you may be able to pull the plastic blocks out and fit them to the old housing better option.sl

fitted now.

after some annoying and lenghty fine sand paper work the coupling slid snugly over the shaft.

i wasnt given options when i asked for the coupling dave i just asked for a coupling for a 62 model.

no plastic blocks in the old style one.
