hi guys,

whilst on my way to work this morning, at the lights went to put it into first, pushed on the clutch and heard the worst noise ive ever heard evertime i change gear it sounds like a scraping and crunching mess of bits.
this is bad. i know this is bad. and im stuck at work right now,
was looking forward to going to the bbq tonight. god damit. anyone out there know what is going on with this please help.:cry

sounds like thrust bearing unseated/stuffed, its clips come loose/broken or maybe the tangs it sits on on the throwout arms one or both snapped.

its a motor out thing but shoulsdnt be too expensive.

crawl underneath and make sure bowden tube has a good bend, cable is OK and external arm is good. iff all these are fine, i bet you'll see the prob as soon as the engine is free of the transaxle.

PS. its times like that i am happy i have a buggy - taking the motor out really is only a 15min job.

You can drive without the clutch

koolkarmakombi - March 24th, 2006 at 01:13 PM

does it do it without touching the clutch pedal?

kirk - March 24th, 2006 at 01:28 PM

hi mate,

no its fine until i touch the clutch to change gear.

any suggestions?

helterskelter400 - March 24th, 2006 at 01:42 PM

you can drive without the clutch but you need to synchronise gear changes and revs, a blip on the throttle helps slide the change through.

having to come to a stop and then restarting can be tiresome- starting on the starter motor .. but it can be done....

a few years ago when i was a aircon/fridgy mechanic i was on my way to a job that was 150km away just as i left, the work truck i had blew a seal in the clutch slave cylinder and i had to drive there and back nearly 300km with no clutch
u become a master once u get the hang of getting the revs right like helterskelter400 said stopping and starting all the time does get a bit much

i don't think i will be able to do it.
too many trafic lights and other cars on my way home, wouldn't want to cause more damage to my car or cause a pileup for others.

oh well, thanks alot guys, i let you know how i go with it.

Yes, sounds like the early clutch throw out bearing,
has come loose as someone else pointed out......

If its the solid type, may have just worn out......

Best of luck

can i fix this myself our will i have to take it somewhere?

any idea of the cost to fix this?, it is the clutch throwout bearing.

helterskelter400 - March 25th, 2006 at 04:51 PM

if you can take the motor out yourself/with mates, you can fix it.

removing the motor is the most technical bit.

helterskelter400 - March 25th, 2006 at 05:05 PM

if you have a normal early beetle, its 16-24 you should be looking for.

16 is what the clutch cable acts on and 24 is the thrust bearing. your probs are likley to be thrust bearing or the clips 23 or the hooks on tha actuating shaft 22.

rip motor out and see exactly what you need first before ordering....
