Noisy drum brakes
urban_myth - March 25th, 2006 at 09:45 AM

I've got a 63 model bug with drum brakes all round. When I am braking at slower speeds (less than 40 kmh) there is a knocking sound coming from the front wheels which slows down as speed does. You can also feel it through the brake pedal. Has anybody come across a similar problem?

maybe your getting close to new shoes man.. metal 2 metal, pull em off and have a look before anymore driving..
it could save you some bucks in the long run.. i would

I've already looked and cant work it out. Theres plenty of meat left on the shoes. I've just put in new bearings and had the front drums machined.

Your drums might be out of round. Happens with heat. Or if its a wide five stud wheel it could also be that your wheel nuts are not evenly tightend causing the drum to be pulled out of round. If you have a torque wrench, loosen them off and tighten them with the torque wrench. Dont forget the tighening order.

my old 1300 had this problem
pulled the drums off and machined them
bam problem gone but like grey57 said it is very easy to distort the drums if the lugs arnt done up evenly

Its a wide 5. Whats the correct torque and tightening order?

Think about how you would draw a 5 pointed star without taking your pencil off the paper... in that order

well as you have had the front drums machined get the front shoes matched to the drums at the brake shop,
if you dont they will probably stay noisey and annoying..
everytime i put new feet in my oval i get them matched to the drums and no problems eventuate..
cheers paul
