auto-electrical question
cray - April 13th, 2006 at 11:14 AM

12.5V from the battery terminals when the car is idle on a 1600cc beetle with a generator. nrma batteries guy reckons that means my generator is stuffed. local auto-electrician reckons it's fine.

aussieveedubbers reckons ________ ?

thanks :)

Sorry,
12.5v is too low to charge Your battery...
Should be closer to 14 volts....

12.5v may keep You going as the battery will often go below 12 volts after cold weather or starting the engine..

Best of Luck

You should be able to pick up a good used generator easily...

really? even vintage veedub reckon 12.5V is normal.

Yep 12.5 at idle is great

when you rev it up the voltage should go to around 13.5 to 14 volts

pretty easy to test with a multi meter

I agree with Lee

Can you call Rivo electrical - 9627 1874

I would trust an auto elect

i have to say i'd probably believe dave over my local auto electrician.

and i don't think i really trust paul at rivo auto-electrical though. i've had a couple of problems with him in the past.

OK.... i have learned something

Always thought you got 13.5V

blutopless2 - April 13th, 2006 at 03:04 PM

i agree.. check it at revs not at idle

bond - April 13th, 2006 at 03:10 PM

have had issues in the past aswell - if you get ~14v at revs than all is good
