150mm Front Pulleys - What Engine?
tassupervee - April 13th, 2006 at 07:46 PM

Men
Can anybody tell me what engines use a 150mm (6") front pulley.
All the stock pulleys I have are about 175mm (7")

Any help (or 150mm pulleys) would be cool.

Do you mean a "power pulley" ???

dangerous - April 13th, 2006 at 08:31 PM

None that I am aware of came with that size except 356 and 912 porsche, and the latter will require a spacer to align the belt.
Are you allowed aftermarket?

Bizarre - April 13th, 2006 at 09:23 PM

Werent the Porsche ones "over" sized??

I tought they were prized for over cooling rather than tyhe power puller "under" cooling???

tassupervee - April 13th, 2006 at 09:30 PM

Ill have to check the rules. Im not too sure whether I can use aftermarket or not. The appearence of the thing means a lot if you know what i mean)!!

So, 356 or 914 eh.

next thing is i have to find one.

Thanks dave

are you trying to over cool or power save??

tassupervee - April 13th, 2006 at 09:43 PM

Ummmmmm.. neither really, im on a different track, I gotta be careful here, I have to.......... create some clearance!!!!!!!!!!
Its for a "special" project!:ninja:

The pulley I got from my 1300 DP was maybe 160mm.
I can measure it after I'm back from hol if you want.
Close or too far?

912 not 914. 914 was type 4 engine and so is the late model 912.
It is the 356 engine and early 912 engine.
"How to Hotrod VW Engines" says the vw is 6.7" and 7".
The "power pulley" is said to be 5.75".."same diameter as porsche", but I dont have a porsche to check.
Bergs sell a 356 replacement because standard they are cast iron.
Tou can get a 5" "dry sump" size if that is what you are thinking.

Bizarre - April 14th, 2006 at 09:36 AM

Tangent here then.................

what i was thinking is the reverse to a power pulley.

Someone on STF was posting a 912 genny pulley is smaller than a VW but still fits the genny.

Rather than a power pulley spinning the fan slower and less power robbing
The 912 would spin the fan more and cool more..... may be at the expense of more power??

Barry

tassupervee - April 14th, 2006 at 01:25 PM

How fast the fan turns on my engine is pretty much irrelevent.
The Gennie pully is shimmed in as far as the thing will go sos to be maximum diameter.
I then use a "power rated" "V" belt which is designed to slip and not to grip when the going gets tough. The belt length is chosen so the belt is loose as buggery and only just stays on.
This way, the fan will only spin up a certain amount and then the belts slip away to their hearts content.

Dave, my bad, typo. 912 & 356
5.75" would be the correct 9enough) item I am after.
You are on the right track thats for sure but i didnt say that K? LOL
Those power pulleys are a bit obvious and after I have looked thru the rules, since the pulley is not in the authorised or non-genuine parts lists, it needs to be as stock appearing as possible.

Ill have a squizz for the Berg item.

Thanks for the help.

Nope. Got arse about face dude.
The smaller the drive (engine) pulley the slower the driven (gennie/alternator) pulley turns.
Fan turns slower, less power soaked to drive it.

Im not really interested in the fan speed tho. Im interested in a clearance issue.
I can work around things but it just creates a lot more work thats all.

The pulleys are the back of the engine...
Not the front.....

My mechanic had the arrows on the pistons pointing to the pulleys but they are supposed to be pointed to the front of the engine....
the flywheel side.....
My manual said to watch that, if the mechanic is used to working on front engined cars....

barry with a bigger pulley dirving the genny pulley u get a faster spinning fan.

say the pulley is 4 times as big as the genny pulley.

the genny pulley turns 4 spins for every one spin of the crank pulley.

can you not run a power pully tass?

some of those degree pulleys are about 160mms ill go measure mine.

Anthiron - April 14th, 2006 at 07:31 PM

ok mine is 175mm but i have seen smaller ones

Think about it Anth

It is the opposite to a power pulley

A smaller genny pulley will spin the fan faster
A larger genny pulley will spin the fan slower
A smaller crank pulley will spin the fan slower
A larger crank pulley will spin the fan faster

Anthiron - April 14th, 2006 at 08:25 PM

sori i wasnt too clear in what i wrote.

the bigger pulley i was talking about in that quote is the crank pulley.

which would be driving the genny pully via the fan belt.

therefore with a bigger pulley (crank) the fan spins faster.

tassupervee - April 14th, 2006 at 08:35 PM

hehehehehehehehe crossed wires there lads!

Sadly no, we must run a stock (appearing) front pully which means no machined steel or ally "power pulleys".
The porsche 356 option would be good 'cept thay are a cast item and the aftermarket ones are machined. Nup, cant run them. Bugger!

Looks like ill have to run the stock 7" item and space it out a bit.................... Unless this pulley from the DP1300 turns out to be the case that Ctefeh mentioned.

Tassupervee,
The 1300 DP pulley measured at 6 11/16" diameter.

Enjoy
