have a 1600 fan shroud and an alternator stand on a type1 donk in a beetle - instead of putting in an alternator am i able to put in a kombi generator which sits just as snug in the alternator stand?

instead of changing electrics etc to 14v with an alternator... if however its my only option then ill go an alternator

The alternator stand will take both a 12 volt generator and the alternator, but a generator stand will not take an alternator.

The charging system voltage on both units is about 13.5 volts, the alternator makes mores amps so you use either on your car.

i take it then that 6v gens were a different diameter therefore a different stand - 12v gens and alts are the same diameter and therefore the same stand?

no variance btw kombi and beetle 12v gens?

ok the 12v generator is smaller in diameter over all to the alternator which has an enlarged section towards the pulley. kombi generators are the same as the beetle but the alternators for the t4 motor (pancake) were different they were more like the moden day ones you see on cars now

The stand is relieved at the front (looking at the motor, technically the rear of the motor) because of the large face on the Type 1 alternator, at the rear of the alternator is barrel section that goes back to the fan housing, this section is the same diameter as a 12 volt generator. I don't think there would be enough meat on a generator stand to modify it for an alternator.

Some Kombis had 38 amp generators, bugs had 30 amp generators.

yeah - i think ive confused myself amongst it all

currently have a 30amp genny and am putting a 38 amp kombi genny on - am going to put an electric gen regulator on so shouldnt have any problems?

Bond, I thunk you got it almost right.

Kombi's in 1600 T1 with a rear hanger mode had a 38 amp genny on a specific stand to suit the more load on the electrics. The T4 engine kombi 1700, 1800, 2000, etc had an anternator specific to that type of engine where the rear fan has a pulley to drive the alternator.

The 30 amp beetle T1 had a different, more common stand.

If you want to fit an alternator then you need a specific stand for the alternator, and sometimes a different fuel pump and carb mods, grinding all in the depends until you try.

Make sure you start with a fully charged battery and polarise it before you load the system.
