Kinda bit of a nutter when it comes to car mechanics. Looking at getting my first bug (late 50s early 60s). After looking at a couple of ads on the
web came across gearbox problems in some of these vws. Most make reference to bad bearings, is it simply possible to replace bearings or that its a
complete overhaul of a transmission? and are bugs easy to work on? I just want to know what i can do on the front lawn and what i cant i guess? anyone
got some tips?
Cheers

have been tinkering with bugs since i was about 12
get yourself some good manuals and you'll do ok.
gearbox issues from my knowledge are few, assuming you want to keep your bug stock

most gearbox problems are from low oil or never having changed oil problems. usually the swingaxle seals crack and let out most of the oil and the owner just keeps driving till they notice the oil stain on the ground when they park somewhere. most VW sites state that a standard gearbox is good for around 150hp all day, everyday. they were over engineered from the start. get a good book and you can not go wrong. good motoring
