hi all. removed the panels from my bug today as well as the glass. ready for a spraying. but in removing the rear panels discovered what i believe to be the bump stop as was pointed out.

from the shock arm is this kind of lil tab that sticks out some way. beneath that on the 'axle' arms to the wheels are rubber stoppers which if the wheel is pushed so far up this lil tab will stop it.

on a guess with 4.5" wheels 165 SR 15" tyres it looks like a lil over 1" of gap.
i am however getting 7" rears for it. and i think the tyre may rub.
oval tofu has the same size rear wheels, and now even has it lowered..... but has a diff pan. much earlier.

any insight?

i think u could ask about chopping them
i am not certain depends on lowering and sprig then bottoming (actually topping the reach of its potential)
this could happen more due to wide wheels giving the axles more leverage.

What will be in the car (load) matters also.
One way works : ie coil over shock (springs around the shocks stiffening the ride but not having the wheel camber in rather out and LOW look....my Ghia has them and no bump stoppers or rubbers

TY, by the looks of things, didnt greatly inspect, but the bump stops seem to be apart of the shock assembly connection at the top. so in theory, replacing shocks means the stop comes off, then new ones go on, u put it back, or in my case not.

i'm keeping the ride height at the rear of mine standard.
no extra passengers are to be in the bug. i have several other cars for carting weight.
this car is simply a daily driver for myself and fellow other in the morning.

anyone know legalities of this. a mech is doing all my work and he is nrma certified, so he can simply approve it yes?

I'm putting 6.5 inch rears on my 64 soon, looks like they will fit. I'm having mine welded up (standard VW centres with wider outer rims) so I can choose my offset. It is tight but it looks OK, I'm just putting the rim as far out as I can whilst still being under the guard...just. 64's have short axles so if you can get the rim with the right offset ie sticking a fair way out, it should be OK, if you are stuck with a certain offset you may need to look into spacers & longer lugs if thats legal.

if uve seen oval tofus car, its the same size rear rim. and will stick out same length. so.

Mr tofu may be getting away with that width because it IS lowered.

just stuck my head under mine, i also have sevens under standard guards. the bunpstop pad you are looking at is actually inside the of the rim because of the lowering, i can see why you are thinking you may strike trouble.

i have had to clearence the triangle bracket that attaches the pan to the body (1/2 way up shock towers), i also rub on the spring plates occasionally.

tofu only just lowered his car. he had the wides on prior to lowering also.
i imagine if he did have the bracket it would have more clearance now than then, but he does not have them anyway.
