Anyone suggest a good method of removing the hex fitting bolts on an IRS cv joint.
Only got one to undo and can't remove the rest, even with a correct size socket fitting, and am worried I will just end up stripping them.:cry
first give them a really good clean with degreaser and a scrap with a suitably sized "tool"
put the socket in them and give it a good bashing with a hammer. most often this will be enough to get them to start turning
good luck!
Make sure you aren't using an allen key type socket,
it needs to be a 12 point splined socket!
-Staggers.
some have allen head, some have spline
Oh, ok. I'm assuming they're aftermarket or a later type? (My '71 and '72 have splined)
Either way, the splined size is M8 12 point.
-Staggers.
air rachet............works every time!
i had this problem once got all out both sides bar one frigen stubbourn little bastard
cut his head off with the angle grinder :P
then once the cv was gone grabbed it good with vice grips and undid it
bought a new bolt for acuple of bucks but smarter idea is buy 5 for spares

Ok, they are the 12 spline ones.
Where do I get such a tool?
repco
super cheap
autopro
snap on
:blah
Most volksie shops would have one. Or you can get a "bit" to fit a socket. Mine is a Minimax bit.
Empi part No is 5796 if you order one from CVD or somewhere else that stocks Empi.
I found a small cold chisel and hammer is useful! 1 out of 24 was stripped internally on mine.

I removed my box and motor today...I was under time constraints and had lost the right size bit.....got the grinder with a wafer thisn wheel and
lopped all theire little heads off. The rest you can turn with your fingers once the cv is removed.

I can slice things up with that grinder with the precision of a surgeon. If not I have the air cutting wheel, the cordless dremmell, the nibbler, the
air hacksaw, the jigsaw with the metal blade and the latest edition...the metal cut off saw......remember my favourite saying.
"when in doubt cut it out"

Love it, just don't come near my car with your tool in your hand!:P
I got the right bit at a tool shop, not supercheap or similar.
The right tool certainly makes all the difference.
onya, have fun!
