Hey guys,
Just wondering what peoples opinions are on building a
performance VW engine for a Beetle. Not like a real real hot engine, but something with a bit of grunt.
Eg. What engine to start with?
What carbs? One or Two?
Etc. Etc.
if you want a bit of grunt cheap (around a grand with second hand parts, if you have a sound 1600 already).
starting with 1600, add dual 36IDF Webers, electronic ignition and 009, 1.4:1 ratio rockers and the biggest header that will bolt on.
i'll tell you how it goes when i put mine into the fasty.

1600 twin port is the best engine to use,
A pair of twin Kadrons, a good exhaust system, is a good start, then you can go with a 90.5mm or 94mm piston and barrel kit to get some bigger
displacement, mild cam, etc etc. all depends on the $$$$$$$ as usual
Here is a good article to get an idea of some hot up parts with out spending too much in $$$

IS your car a daily driver or a weekend warrior??
If it is a daily i would go the single carb - just find it easier.
Other wise dual IDF36's on a 1600 give it good pep.
I have a 1916 with stock carb and that does about 25% ove stock HP. Bout the same as the 1600 and Webers
I wouldnt use a 009 distributor
Why not?

Like has already been said, 36IDFs, 009, elec ignition, 1.4:1 ratio rockers and a good header on a 1600tp. All easy to do yourself without pulling the engine to do it.
ok kool,
How much hp roughly?
Probally 60+ at the wheels
I had a 1776 set up similar and got 61
I have a 1916 stock set up at 50
Now - before you say that aint much, show me a stock set up that has 40 at the wheels. This is at LEAST a 50% increase.
Not bad for like under a grand outlay on top of your 1600
