Brake fluid type
xonicjan - April 28th, 2006 at 08:33 AM

I need to top up my brake fluid in my New Beetle.(Lights flashing eek!)

Is there any particular type I have to use or off the shelf o.k?

I rang VW Australia and I got the "You have to use VW Brake fluid" etc etc.

Refer to the owners manaul to confirm, but chances are a DOT 4 fluid will do the job. I don't know if there is much difference in quality between brands. I use Castrol Response super DOT 4, it's generally the most expensive at $7.99.

The owners manual doesnt have the type.

It just tells you to use a VW Service centre to add/change brake fluid.

Thanks

Yes, I've only seen DOT 4 brake fluid.....

Just use a good brand... like Castrol etc...

Can't go wrong....

I haven't heard of any others....

DOT 3 is a lower spec version of DOT 4 and DOT 5 is a silicone based fluid, which is not very commonly available.

That makes is Hard......

Another Brake Fluid..... YIKES....

Try ringing around a few VW Retail outlets for the correct
Brake fluid....
Its NOT worth putting the incorrect one in....
You wouldn't know what VW are using......

and You wouldn't want to Mix DOT 5 to DOT 6 if You have it in Your car.....
they may not be compatible....

VW use their own branded stuff.Take it in to get done and find out WHY the fluid is low in the first place.....As for what "DOT" it is I'm 100% sure its 4 but i'd wanna know why it was low....

Yes it had to go somewhere.....

Not good on a late model vehicle....
