5mm push and pull play in the passenger side axle
Anthiron - April 29th, 2006 at 03:10 PM

ok ive figured out what the strange clunk under heavy braking is.

i can pull and push the passenger side rear tyre/wheel/drum/axle about 5mm in and out.

as in not like wheel bearing movement the whole axle moves in and out.

whats the deal here?

loose "big axle" nut.

u mean the 36mm axle nut?

i dont have a 36mm socket but had one borrowed about a week ago and it was mighty tight then.

the play isnt in the drum and nut the whole axle moves. wouldnt i be able to get the drum to move back off the nut if there was a loose nut?

yep the 36mm

they need to be really, really tight. often you won't be able to see the movment, just hear and feel it.

you won't get it tight enough with a long bar, or average rattle gun. a specialised tool is needed

i haaven't used this type but, heres one that uses a rachet system and the wheel nuts...

the one we use is like a giant t-bar. on each end of the tee(which is 1 meter accross of 2inch steel bar) it has a 2kg wieght!. it allows you to get the tyre spinning, and then with all your might, the tbar and its weights is thrown in the opposite direction.

that"s the kind of force required

hmm ok.

i was using a 36mm bar with a sliding bar in that and about 3 foot of pipe on the end with me jumping on it.

Nick i would guess that at some time your box has been apart and the incorrect matching bearing caps have been fitted to your axle end , resulting in the bearing being able to move in and out.
I only know this due to i had the same problem a few years ago on my manx.
There is 3 different depth bearing caps/retainers and they all have different depths , you just have to find the one thats right for your axle.
I wouldn't stop driving the car over the problem but fix it soon.

hmm ok

what years were the different caps on?

Sorry don't know but if i come up the coast tomorow i can bring what spear caps i have and you can see if one of those fits (see my post D Isl tomorow)
