my 74 kombi has a noise coming from the back which is annoying the hell out of me. it only appears when the car has been driving for 20 minutes or so.
It only happens when the accelerator is pressed down (doesn't do it idling or coasting). It is coming from the back area. It is a knocking /
banging noise. thud, thud thud thud thud...kinda thing.Sounds a bit like a box lid scraping up and down when not closed properly. Any ideas?
sorry about the crappy noise explanation.
Ian
check the torque on the head studs. Just get a screwdriver and try and move the washer under the bolts, it them move at all your head is loose
then again it could be a very simple .. good luck
shock absorbers?
Glenn's wild guess " the front engine mount " (but would do it when cold as well).
What about that fan on the crank shaft?
could it be loose ?
Glenns wild guess is quite probable, but to help please clarify does it repeatedly bang clunk etc while the accelarator is held down or does it give its bang clunk once each time the accelerator is pressed down ( the latter being fore/aft movement of transaxle) if constant you cou;ld remove the top engine cover & GET SOME BRAVE VOLUNTEER TO sit in the back & watch /listen while you drive, to try & narrow down, otherwise you may be ableto get Mel Gibson to hang on underneath & watch the transaxle, seriously though, this sort of noise, if in the transaxle to hubs somewhere can have possible dangerous & expensive consequences if not found
I'm having the brakes done on Monday 9rear ones) so maybe something will come to light then (?) The banging noise is a repeated one...bang bang
bang bang...which goes only when it is accelerating. Sometimes it is louder than at other times. Could even be described as a hammer on wood
sound...
bloomin' frustrating though, as I know it won't be happening when I see my mechanic Monday. The reply about it being dangerous is scaring me
though!
Fan on crankshaft loose..NO. I have had that problem before and this noise is differnet. I have had the fan replaced.
cheers, Ian
now I'm thinking ring gear in diff
Thanks everyone for this. Let me stress though (if it helps or makes any difference) that it only does it after the car has been driving for a while
(so it has warmed up). It seems to do it under load also (a slight rise in the road for instance). It's only been doing it the past couple of
weeks. Not all the time either. It did'nt do it on the way to work today, but did on the way home (and only on a steepish hill...well any hill is
steep for my kombi). Then it stopped clunking when I levelled out on a flat piece of road.
Ian
been looking around the net to see if anyone else has a similar problem On the UK vw site...there seems to be a lot of people with it and the answer
seems to be,,...
Almost certainly CV joint, take the driveshafts off, turn them round - end to end - and refit them.
what do ya reckon?
While you have them off , clean and repack them as they are supposed to done every 12mths give or take [Castrol LMM grease]
Sounds like you have it,
have you tried asking Ron Vis?
jjust a follow up. Might be of interest. I had the rear drums machined yesterday (out 30 and 50 thou.!) and new pads. The large nut on one of the axles was loose. The old brake pads were knackered and in the shape of a triangle. This was the problem according to my mechanic. Haven't heard the noise since. cheers everyone.
Well done!! I wonder why it only happeded when the car was cold?
I missed the post earlier, and was going to off you a loan of my creeper trolley so you could try the Mel Gibson trick!!
KK...it was only happening when the car was 'warm' or aftert travelling for 20 minutes or so. Cheers, ian:

Thanks for leting us know the cause of the prolem, saves us a lot of time down the track. Finding the actual cause of any noise is important, at the
least it will save you a lot of money & it could also save your life, I found one brakeshoe dropped off (scraping noise) & I will now check
both axle nuts
Glad to hear that it was brakes / bearings.
They are a lot cheaper than what I suspected.
wave to me as you cruise by :thumb
3 Kombi's in my front Yard , mmmmmmmmmmmmm:thumb

wanna have only one?
you know i'm in the market!
