Ok quick one - i have a 72s with a MPH speedo - i want to know can i stick the KMPH speedo i have handy straight on the end of the speedo cable?
Will it be accurate or will the speed be way out? or will it not fit at all? The fittings look the same - but then i havent had a real close look.
I know the odometer will be out but i can fix that
Ok, I don't know bugs real well but down the bottom of the speedo dail somewhere should be some very small numbers with something like /750 or /1250 or similar , this irelates to the gears in the speedo if the numers are identical on the two different speedos , then the replacement willl be accurate, this goes for almost anty speedo on any car, give us a hint what your next instrument will be
Yep it will work. I adapted a type 2 km'h speedo to fit into the type 1 mph speedo gauge.
As far as accuracy goes, it will be as accurate as any other 30 yr old bit of technology. Just try and keep your tyre diameters as close to stock as
possible.
You can use speedo drive cables from diferent models too. This gives you options for the cable length. I ended up with a kombi cable in my bug as its
a bit longer, and the speedo drive input on the combi is at 90 degrees not 45 degrees like a type 1.
Cheers,
Ian.
They are both standard bug items. Current is a 72 super (MPH) and i have one from a 74L (KMH) - im not worried if its out like 5k's either way -
i just didnt want to swap it and see it reading 20km/h when im clearly doing 80+!
Thanks guys!
James
Has the KLM speedo been stuffed around with ??? They fit straight over and its the same connection for cable.
Mum said u havent changed the wheels so it should read the same.
Nah the KMH speedo should be fine.
The wheels arent stock - you know me better than that Dave...
14" Bathurst Globes. Not too worried about the difference, wont put it too far out.
By my MPH speedo doesnt work at all.
Id rather have a rough idea than no idea!
