I've got a late (1975 model) beetle 1600 engine to put into my early bug. I've already pulled out the narked 1200 and labelled where all the wires came from and need to know where the wires that came off the old regulator go onto the alternator.

i think you might have to seperately mount a new regulator (bosch electric) probly under the back seat and wire to the alternator. +, - and earth. ?

is it an internal (one post for wire) or external (3 pin plug) alternator???

the alternator has an internal regulator. Its out of the very last model beetle, the one with rack and pinion steering.

Something else you will need to think about - the earlier engine bays are smaller than late models so you may/will need to trim some tinware

Mor importnatly, your flywheel won't exactly fit the 6V trans or starter

I've got the diegrinder handy to fix the bellhousing problem, as well as a 12 volt starter to replace the 6 volt starter. The car was converted to 12 volt beforehand. Trimming tinware isnt exactly a problem, and I've also got an early style pressure plate with the ring on it to suit the early style thrust race bearing. I've pretty much sussed everything out except how to wire it up.

If your car was still 6v all you have to do is cut the spade end of the big red wire (from the starter) and replace with an end with the appropriate size hole and fit it to the post on the alternator, then attach the small dia (blue?) wire comming across from the left to the small spade terminal acjacent to the main post on the alternator, this is the generator warning light wire.
