baybuscamperkid - April 11th, 2003 at 05:20 PM

just looking to put a rack on my kombi. must be able to survive a 12month road trip, not be too much in the way of the engine lid (because of my radiator) and must be able to carry a 26inch schwinn spitfire a couple of years older then my van.

any suggestions?

Any chance of a pic of your radiator set-up...:D

why not make the bike rack mount on the front of the kombi like the spare wheel holder,or if you have the spare wheel on the front put it on top of the car on a rack ,as you're going to need more than 1 spare any way then mount the bike holder or on your bull bar

Correct me if I'm wrong anyone from NSW but I think it's illegal now in this State to have anything protruding in front of the bullbar. Not sure about other States though.

Fiamma used to make a rack that attached to the back top hatch (door) on the Kombi, they stopped making them a few years back, but the Poms and the Americans convinced the company to start making them again, I have seen them in a catalogue that was sent to me from the UK, I dont know if you can get them here again, try a caravan or campervan accessory place, they import this companys awnings, and may be able to get you one, price is about $300 dollars, but they are good racks both wheels of the bike are supported in a channel and the bikes dont flop around.
This mob has them in the UK. Part No JKA0060

Yes it's illegal, so spare wheels on the front of the bullbar are not allowed. Not just NSW but pretty much everywhere. The good news is that the police don't seem to care, they just ignore it. Probably because they're so used to seeing spares on the front of Kombis that they just assume that they're supposed to be there.

baybuscamperkid - May 3rd, 2003 at 07:26 PM

thanks rozrob, i know that kind of rack well, problem is that it is over the engine lid, where my radiator sits, and the bike i want to carry is a cruiser, which has a curvy frame and so will probably not fit in that style one.

David, still interested in hearing about the rack you have. E-mail me about it, if i dont here from u soon i will u2u you.

rozrob - May 6th, 2003 at 08:03 AM

two bikes

baybuscamperkid - May 6th, 2003 at 06:51 PM

as i said, that options fine if no other comes up, but it is in the way of my RADIATOR and will not hold a cruiser that has a CURVY frame, as the top plate will not bolt securely around the curvy bars
