Rear view mirror - take it off
GTMac - May 15th, 2006 at 08:48 AM

How do you get the rear view mirror off a Type 3?

Do you peel back the rubber to get to screws????

Thanks, Andrew

Just pull it off.

Pull it off? Is that just the mirror part or the whole thing? I want to replace it with another unit from a Lexus.

on my 67 bug i used to have, i just pealed back the flexible plastic to find some screws, and just unscrewed it.

can't seem to work out my 69 one though. I try to peal the plastic back, but it is really stiff, and doesn't flex back that much, i worry that i might bust it.

get a flat head screw driver, wrap the end in masking tape as to not scratch the body or anything else, and poke it through, see if u can get the lip of the plastic to come up. Give it a go, be gentle, if it doesn't seem to want to budge to easily, leave it till someone here can give u some advice a little more specific to ur car.

Most VW mirrors I have seen, and all the ones I have removed have just pulled off. The whole arm and mirror assy. There is a spring clip inside the roof that stays put and the mirror just pulls out.

Cool Joel, thats good to know, you have a steering column half way through your chest but the vanity mirror falls out.

Will try that. Am updating the poor old Fasty with some visors that have the mirrors and auto lights out of a Lexus IS300 along with the rear view mirror that is wider and so much better.

That's the truth! Took me ages to pull mine out but when you get it right it's easy!
