Anyone here have the above flywheels and able to measure accurately the diameter of the flywheels (within 0.5mm) for reference.

OD of the ring gear teeth?
272mm
I have a new replacement 6V ringear that I got from BERG$ and it is 272.5mm
For reference, a 12V is 276mm
Thanks for the info.

Seems strange on that size as the 12 volt flywheels I have measures 272.5 mm over the ring gear. Any others with the 6 volt ones as a double
check?

Will check tomorrow for you Dallas.
Knew i forgot to do something when i got back............
I have both the early and late type 3 engines sitting side by side.
How was the trip back down south? A bit slow towing the S/B?

One of the posts above had me thinking I couldn't read a vernier caliper these days! Maybe there are some around which has a larger diameter and a
non-standard starter pinion? Just had this interest in the different "O"utside "D"iameters of flywheels.
One other point was I didn't think I would need to clarify that this dimension was over the gear teeth as they are "usually" on the outer rim of
the flywheel!
The different measurements given over the years must be confusing and it would be great to have these sizes for all to have when building the
different vintage engines.

Just double checked the ODs and the 6volt is 272.5 and 12volt is 276.
The 6V teeth are 109 in number and noticably courser.
The 12V have 130 teeth and are fine compared to the 6V.
I have heard of a 12volt starter with the chunkyer pinion like a 6V starter.
The reference diameters I was wandering about were the clutch diameters.
Some people refer to a 6V as 180mm and 12v as 200, which as you know is not correct.
VW made 6 and 12 volt versions of both clutch diameters, with and without "O" rings.
Well may be not 12V, 180mm, non O-ring......
I'll check the number of teeth on the one tomorrow as it's at work but it's certainly the finer teeth than the 6 volt wheel. Students use it for a
compression test engine but it is the same starter etc as the one in the Notch which is the 12 volt/200mm 1600 unit.
