dash restoration
vwtrev1 - June 2nd, 2006 at 04:23 PM

How do you restore the dash on a bay to good condition again. Mine has been tampered with by PO and is marked where a larger radio was once. I'm thinking to vynl spray it. It has the rough surface of the late bays
Thanks feelas///

What is black crackle paint? What is the finish like compared to the original dash finish?
I'm interested for the type 3 and the kombi in fact! Any photos of the finished product out there?

Just pop down to the hardware store and get it from there... comes in a spray can and when it dries it comes out all textured. there are different types though, some are dimpled, some are grainy, etc.
Finish can be pretty good depending.. my dad used it to make a matching panel for the dash in his MG. he did that before i was born and it's still going strong... and i've used the crackle paint a few times aswell.

Easiest thing is to just grab a can and test it out on a tin can or something... see if it's suitable for what you want.

Thanks Bails. I know a place in Syd that does type 3 dashboards too, so for my notch I'll have it done properly.
Was thinking about this paint for my kombi and volvo dash.
Cheers,

The one below is still listed in the phone book but quality is unknown This is the one which was founded by a Bill Johnson from memory and was at Seven Hills off Power's Road in that industrial area. He sold the business years back and it moved to Arndell Pk. I had the last Type 3 dash recovered by a place around Revesby somewhere but had some hassles with delivery and could have been a better job. Maybe the Melbourne guys have a better contact there.

That sounds like the one from Revesby which I used about 4 years back. I didn't think he was still around as I threatened to kill him if he wrecked the early Type 3 dash. It took quite a bit of fitting to be acceptable but the ends still haunt me! Bill Johnson did the covering with the pad screwed to an actual dash which prevented things shrinking.

I have only used vinyl paint on vinyl seats many years ago....
I have used the wrinkle finish on metal boxes etc over the years... with good results...
but I'm presuming You are tyring to match the dash finish...
There is a dash restorer around the Brisbane area....

I saw a Karmann Ghia cabriolet with a dash done there & it was very good job...
Maybe better than original...
car was originally LHD...

I did have a card and have given the info to a few people,
no one ever came back and said they were no good...

Sorry, I cannot find the card....
