Hi

That is a strange number, it might be a police number for a new crankcase. I assume its from a Type 3 not a T3. You can identify the motor by other means, early type 3s used a single relief valve case with 6 mm oil pump studs, later ones used 8 mm oil pump studs and really late ones had twin relief valve cases, 8 mm oil studs.

soz, i meant type 3.

the number it self does look oddly stamped. The numbers aren't exactly straightly plonked. doesn't look like a manufacture job. I wouldn't know, but yeah.

bajachris88 - June 4th, 2006 at 08:13 PM

hey steve, if it was a late one, or really late one, would it be a 1600?

1303Steve - June 4th, 2006 at 09:08 PM

Hi

It would still be a 1600, they are still Type 1 based motors, so 69 stroke by 85.5 bore = 1585 cc

bajachris88 - June 4th, 2006 at 09:10 PM

cheers mate. will measure the oil pump studs then.

bond - June 4th, 2006 at 11:38 PM

chris - i thought from the look of the pic that the head/case studs were 10mm - not sure what stock motor came with these? looked bigger than 8s...

nick?

bajachris88 - June 4th, 2006 at 11:43 PM

hmm.
WAIT!

When i got this engine case, there was something said about a KG. Hmm....

Could it explain the odd number AND the studs? i haven't measured em yet. But just opening options.

bond - June 4th, 2006 at 11:45 PM

chris -

http://www.type2.com/bartnik/enginecodes.htm

TYPE 3:

hmm. O : 1963-1965 capacity: 1500 (no cam bearings)

My fine machine has engine No 0123523.Which I believe is a 62 1500.Some say 63 but who cares.
Your engine is a late 63.Type 3

bajachris88 - June 7th, 2006 at 03:54 PM

thanks Dallan :D

Kool, it has been confirmed! :P just got my VW idiots guide book, it backs it up too.

1500S - June 7th, 2006 at 04:31 PM

Should have looked at my case Chris. My case is around Sept. 64 and it is O 747182, VIN number of pan is 0474050 and was produced around May 64 for ref. I think the body actually waited around sometime for an engine! That is the original engine number written in the manual with the vehicle so it will give you somewhere before that as a date as already stated above. What condition is it in around the cam bearings?

Link which may help. http://www.thesamba.com/vw/archives/info/serialnumberst3.php
