hows it going... just wondering if there were any general long distance driving tips with VW's (distance between breaks, cruising speed, things that commonly go wrong / what to bring)... probabley a stupid question but if you have some advice.. i'd love to hear it...

I have gone from Brisbane to Canberra and back in my Baja, and my advice is;
* a quiet exhaust is good
* tall baja gearing is good
* a nice CD player is also good
* breaking it up into about 6hr/day max makes it comfortable.

nothing technical about that! should be in the general chit chat ;)

We have travelled from Sydney to Perth(5000+km) in a 76 camper... Average speed was 80km/h we were able to hit 100km/h slip-streaming a B-double(not for the faint hearted):o...The only things we did to the kombi was fit oil temp gauge and aftermarket oil cooler and elephant ears...It took us 5 days...

PS: there ain't no rush, enjoy the driving and this amazing Country...:D

I drove Melbourne to Noosa and back in a dead stock '75 kombi. I drove 5-6 hours a day, and only in daylight. I cruised at around 90 kmh on the major roads, which suited the car, saved juice, and gave me time to appreciate the scenery.

I stopped for breaks every few hours at the most, and I tried not to aim to be anywhere at a set time. I found that the few times I set goalposts caused me to rush, so I'd arrive tired and cranky. Take it easy and enjoy the trip!

Oh yeah, keep the drinks flowing! (non-alcoholic, of course!!!) :thumb:)

I've done canberra to brissy in a day.plus lots of other smaller runs. Don't rush, have 2 drivers , drink a fair amount, wear sunglasses, stop every 2 to 3 hours. enjoy!!! if u have a stereo use it or wear ear plugs if u have a loud exhaust. find a speed the car is comfortable doing, my bug likes 100 to 110.

Take spares, including oil, oil lines if u have a extra cooler, fan belt, general tools, spare tyre, a bottle jack is also a good idea, spare oil filter, fuel filter, plus general spare bolts and assoc odds and ends eg zip ties, tape, etc. racq ultra cover is also wise.
