Speedo cable
Quickbug - April 15th, 2003 at 02:06 PM

Ok my speedo cable appears to be kaput!
Is it an easy-ish job to replace?
Or is it a fiddly farty hours long job for the inexperienced?
What are we dealing with here?
Talking 72S bug...

Eazy - peezy! :P

Just to make sure - it clips into the hub of you front passenger wheel. There should be a clip on the little nipple (snigger ...snigger). Now look where the cable feeds up to the speedo.
Not sure about a 72 but earlier ones you attacked from inside the boot area, my 74 you pull the speedo out from the inside.
There "should" be enough give in the wires attatched to get your hand round the back and di connect.
Ummm..... dont reef it out or you will break all the wires. At best you will have no idea where they go.
Now "just" slide the old one out and slide the new one in.

just make sure it isnt the speedo that is dead. Disconnect the two ends and see if you can spin the cable.

On mine the cable was OK but the speedo had locked tight.

Another time the square hole in the "hub cap" had rounded out and wasnt turning the cable.

You should have gotten one of those on Sat morning James. How did the coil bracket go.

Quickbug - April 15th, 2003 at 03:00 PM

Ah sounds easy thanks Blue.
I changed the speedo over - no go - must be the cable i assume.

I didnt know it was the cable at that stage Dave!
Bracket went well - but the b*tch still isnt acting right....
i dont know whats wrong with it, but it keeps missing and lets out the occasonal huge backfire.
I think maybe a major service is needed but im out of $$ at the moment :(

James check the simple things first
are the points clean and set to the right gap 0.016 "
it sounds like points to me.

Then check the timing

vw54 - April 15th, 2003 at 08:07 PM

Oh forgot the speedo cable ... jack the car up n rotate the wheel with the cable disconnected... u should be able to see it rotating

might be the square drive on the grease cap has been rounded, n not connecting with the cable square drive.

timing - grrrr.....

Can timing be adjusted without a timing gun?
Timing tends to go over my head so i leave it for a mechanic usually.
009 dizzy

vw54 - April 16th, 2003 at 10:43 AM

You can but it wont be correct it will be close but probally will use more fuel

Quickbug - April 16th, 2003 at 10:55 AM
