On my filler up cap it says 91 but if I do the engine starts pinging. I have an original vacuum advancer with normal timing settings. I don't think
it is an original 1300. Rego papers say it is a 1500. Something to do with the compression ratio?

i believe you need to have the timing adjusted for the fuel that you run... i use 98 octane in both my beetles and they run great.
Running hot and carbon deposits can also cause pininging. I recently tore down a 1600 DP from a splitty, and was shocked by the amount of crud ontop
of the pistons, in the combustion chambers and in the inlet ports.
The three main reasons for pininging are too far advanced timing, excessive cr and overheating. Timining is easy to check, the other two require more
work. Just swapping to higher RON fuel may stop pinging, but will not fix the underlyining problem.

If it was tuned for LRP petrol....
normal unleaded is much lower in Octane.... 91
whereas the old Super or LRP was around 97 I think...
so 98 octane is a good one...
My 1600 single port has shims uder the head... to lower the Compression Ratio....
