Quick P & C Question

Hello all

My old 1600 TP gave up in the weekend, day before the NZ Nationals in fact... but I'll tell that story in another post.

So it's time to think seriously about a rebuild. Some one here has new Cofab pistons and cylinder kits really cheap- I'm sure I've read about them begin difficult to balance.

(errr... should that be "Cofap"?)

Anyone used them? Any feedback- good or bad

I'm looking at building a stock (or near) 1600 for a cheap and reliable engine while I sort the rest of the body etc out then I can turn my attention back that way, probably in a few years time :D

Why would they be difficult to Balance....
there only being weighed against one another ... and material removed from the heaviest one to reduce it weight to the lightest???

Which farmer told you this bull shit ????

From memory (which is pretty fried right now) I read it on shoptalkforums somewhere, ages ago. I think they were making reference to the difference between the heaviest and lightest pistons being large, so lots of material had to come off.

But if they're good then that would suit me, I was only just starting to get the bank balance back in order :)

yeah i'm running cofap pistons, they are a brazilian subsidary of Mahle (german company). They were all of a similar weight so it was easy to balance. Cheap and they work.

If the balancing guy person knows what there doing, the psitons are weight seperatly without the piston pins.

Then the pins are weighed and the lightest pin is matched to the heavest piston and so on so less metal has to be removed.

Pretty simple method... and some balance people remove the weight from the pistion pin as this is made from steel and less would have to be removed to reduce the weight vs removal of alloy from the piston.

Removal of metal from the piston pin wont hurt as it floats in the piston anyway. Its a bit harder to remove the steel due to hardness, but its not impossible.

Cofap is the generic name of the same "Cima/Mahle" P&Cs used by the factory. If you have a set of "Mahle" P&Cs you'll notice on the box they are also made in Brazil.

The MAHLE warehouse is only down the road from work. I have been to scared to go in there, but now i have a reason. I will ask them about the branding and so on. Will post response.
