I was wondering if anyone could give me an idea of what a new or reco'd generator should cost for my superbug?

I bought a new one last year and it cost about $180 from memory. The regulator was extra and I have to fot it myself.

hmm...interesting. I was told abt $400 for a reco one...i think that included fitting but not too sure...:(

It would have to be. Cant remember what the regulator cost. Probably $60 or $70 bucks. Pays to replace the regulator at the same time. If you have some mechanical knowledge and a good workshop manual, its not hard to replace the generator. You will also need a 36mm socket to undo the large nut that attaches the fan to the generator. Not the sort of thing you will find in the average tool box.
Still if you want discover how a VW works and do the work yourself it can be quite satisfiying. And save a bit of cash too.

John Muirs "How to keep your VW alive for the complete idiot"
Great book, all written in laymans terms and plain english with no mechanics jargon.
Great read too.
Down side is they are a tad bit hard to get hold of new. I lost my copy about 7 years ago.
Sure some one here could help you out.
Other than that go for Scientific Publications manual for your year/model VW.

$400! - Crikey, Mickmotors could sell you a complete, new, alternator kit for less than that. I think someone wasn't up on VWs, grrrl. Call Mick, or look in the directory here: Plenty of red-blooded males who'd fit it for you if you can't (if not red-blooded, VW-mad.)

70Autostik, the business who gave me that quote is a well known sydney Volkswagen specialist which has been around for donkeys years and has done a lot of work on my car and I have never had a problem with their work or pricing previously...go figure... :)

hmm $400 for drive in drive out is "fairly" reasonable.

I paid $150 for my last alternator (but that was "trade";)

$250 - yeah 4 - 5 hours

"IF" you are handy but it means
taking the engine lid and hinges off
pulling the carby
taking off the fan housing
replacing the alternator (removing fan first)
reverse the above.

Otherwise call a few shops.
Simple queation

Click on "OZ VW BUISNESS DIRECTORY" up the top and you will get a list of VW shops in your area.

An alternator change is a SIMPLE job

I would suggest some one like Lou at Regents Park at Lous A1.

He is listed in the directory
