My 76 2l kombi recently developed the annoying habit of running on backwards after a long trip. I seem to recall someone else having that problem on this forum so I thought I'd report that the problem went away when I adjusted the valves! All were tight.

Do you mean you turned the engine off, and it stopped...then began to rotate in the reverse direction by itself??? Weird!

Glad to hear it was an easy fix. Regular valve adjustments are probably the most important thing you should do to VW engines, along with regular oil changes.
