76 kombi questions
Baldy67 - October 23rd, 2006 at 10:09 AM

A friend of my wife has got a 76 kombi camper,it has a 2lt fuel injected motor in it that is losing charge in the battery and when you start it,it is revving to around 3 to 4000revs and stays like that and seems to be running on 3 cylinders.......any help would be great

Firstly, if it is charging and then losing charge, either the battery needs replacing or there is something running when the ignition is switched off which drains the battery while the vehicle is parked. If in doubt, any auto electrician will be able to sort it out fairly easily.

As for the fast idle; Mine used to have a hose that came off regularly and caused a fast idle and poor running. Have a look around the engine bay and make sure everything is connected.

On the inlet manifolds on the in side is a vac hose that goes off to the brake booster.

bet this will be either cracked or loose

i will have a look at the hoses........thanks guys

In that case, it sounds like it may not be charging, which could be the alternator, battery, or just dodgy connections. Start with cleaning the battery terminals, and check the earth strap too.

Again, an auto elec should be able to identify the problem within about 10 minutes....

found a cracked hose, replaced it and it seems to run a lot better, when you hit the gas it revs up but still takes about 5 seconds to drop off again....getting a mate to look at that on saturday....cheers.....baldy

From factor kombi engines were fitted with a throttle return dampener to reduce emissions, not sure if FI had them tho. This might be the reason its taking a while to return to idle. If you dont want it ill have it ;-)
