advice sort. Kombi gets the shakes under stress and thats only leaving the kurb...

Hi

I have a slight problem with my 74 kombi 1800 and thought i'd write it up in the hope that some one could identify the cause for me.

Basically it gets the "shakes" (as in it feels as though i am going over a cattle grid) but this only occurs when the engine is under stress, ie, up to 60kph (when pulling off) or going up a hill (i do drop back from 4th to 3rd and it is better for a while).

My mechanic who has serviced the car ever since i have had it (1999) has tried everything including fuel pumps both electric and the other type (sorry i'm not mechanically minded), checked fuel lines, replaced filter etc and a host of other options i can't remember. As he has now left the district in retirement after unsuccessfully trying to solve the problem (he is a respected vw mechanic of 40 yrs standing, had the car for 2 months and charged me nothing , i told him to keep it as long as he needed it as i still had the use of my beetle, so it was not an inconvenience).

Another way of trying to describe it is it feels like water in the line or it is starving of petrol and yet once i go above 60 kph or hit flat open road, i cruise effortlessly at 90 - 100 kph.

Any ideas? As i dont get the use of the computer all that often, it will be Wednesday at the earliest till i can return, failing that it will be next sunday, so if anyone can help i would like to thank you now in advance.

regards

thanx guys for your replies. I will put that to a few mechanics in town and see if the least reluctant is prepared to have a go or at least confirm your suggestions. At worse i think i can get to canberra during the xmas holidays and take it to fyshwik. (as i only drive locally ie 20 or 30 kms a day i think it will survive till then, its just so annoying)

once again, thank you for your time, it is appreciated.

cheers

I had that problem and found the bracket holding the bend in the clutch cable had cracked and was slowly bending. It as causing the clutch to engage to fast and the motor was jumping around heaps. Especialy up hill. I got a weld put in it for $10 and that was the end of it.

Took months to find

all the best
