help with starter motor on 12 V for a 64 beetle
Bertie_64 - November 13th, 2006 at 11:03 AM

My Beetle has just been converted to 12 V from 6V. Has anyone got ideas of reducing the voltage to the starter motor? It does a million revs when it's starting!!

Many people have run 6V starters for years on 12V without a problem. The starters are well built (1960s style!) and the engine starts real quick so there's no problem with overheating or whatever.

If it ain't broke don't fix it and if it breaks, you were gunna fix it anyway!

Years ago, there was a 12 volt solenoid available from 1960s holden 6 that was a bolt on.
But I think you will have more trouble finding one of those than VW parts.

But the only trouble I have had (using the 6V starter on 12V), was if the bush in the G'box is sad,
the FW teeth can cop a hard time.

you are better off running the 6v starter. too much trouble to try and drop voltage due to the current that the starter will draw.
