Pretty sure it was '68, Holden and Ford couldn't use it, because Porche's patent hadn't expired yet and only the Japanese (OK, and some Europeans,) were willing to pay the licensing...

Big Bore, The auto option did not come out till 1969.
Late 68 the changed to IRS.
The other deference is in the "Changeover" models is the dash was the later type.
With the different vent controls, glovebox catch and ashtray. The later steering column was used and the doors were the later style i.e.:Later external handles, quater window locks and doortrims.
Still not as stylish as the earlier models.
They are worse at keeping the engine cool as they still have the early rear vents and very little ventalation for the 1600TP with the Auto.
A very HIGH maintance vehicle.
I know. I have one.

Just another T3 question why is the 71 mod a stand alone year. When looking for some parts the 71 is refered to by itself?

Unity,

The 1835 would not create as drama as it has enough grunt to use the auto.
The standard 1600 is a bit little to push such weight.
Nige, a cant answer that. i thought that the 71 would be the same as a 72.

I had seen on a doco that the Type 3's were the slowest VW ever made.
I could not believe my ears.
But thinking about it.... that poor 1600 pushing the heavy type 3 body...
lucky they stayed around so long...

Craig Torrens - May 5th, 2003 at 07:40 PM

slower than a 36hp in a splitty ??

I doubt that !:D

Tazzielittle - May 5th, 2003 at 09:17 PM

According to the doco.... it was...

choppa - May 5th, 2003 at 11:59 PM

Well this will thro a spanna in the works.
Ive owned two 69 typ 3's.
My first was a fastback and it was IRS. And my notch which i still own was swingaxle with the Z bar overload spring

Tazzielittle - May 6th, 2003 at 08:32 PM

Is the notch a aussie built?
It sounds like it.
The german imports from late 68 were all IRS.
Some of teh Aussie built ones were swing axel.
Its probly a early 69 aussie built.

Want your spanner back?

SKEWtYpe3 - May 8th, 2003 at 12:40 AM

type 3s are a spare parts car, every one is different ! The one adam has in his yard at the moment was interesting with all its old and new parts on it !
very funny things u find when pulling them apart !
AND damn was there a few different sized bolts in mine ! but they all fitted well.......!

70AutoStik - May 8th, 2003 at 11:33 PM

A nice warm engine in a type 3 beats every shopping trolley on the market in the last twenty years! Smooth the profile, add sway-bars, air-dams and some decent tyres: you've got a bloody nice student car (that your future wife will probably marry you just to own.)

I'm a beetle man, but aircooled rules!

Phil74Camper - May 9th, 2003 at 10:31 AM

I wish that were true - when I had my Beetle all the girls I took out did not like it much. I think they detected the affection I felt for it and felt threatened, who knows?

My most recent ex can't stand my Kombi - she won't ride in it because it does not have air con, she feels silly sitting so high and other Kombi owners waving at us made her feel silly.

That's why she's an ex.

But I'm still looking...

Unity-28 - May 9th, 2003 at 02:14 PM

My missus Loves the notch, and Loves the bug im doing! She isnt "INTO" VW but does like them! Thats why Im looking for a Karmann Cab, TO do it up for her!
